Each time it rained the water would flood and get away slowly to the street.

Our technicians attended and after assessing the access on the site they used the camera to conduct a CCTV survey of the pipe to see if they could identify what was causing the blockage. Their camera saw a coloured object in the pipe. They then used their high pressure jetblaster to clear the blockage from the pipe.

What they discovered were plastic balls in the pipe 5 or 6 of them that were choking up the stormwater pipe. The clients children had been playing a game of hide the toy only that they failed to seek and retrieve them!

Our client was amused and happy that the issue was resolved and he no longer had blocked pipes.

Level 1 Water Restrictions as now in effect in Sydney, Blue  Mountains and Illawarra Regions.

Many Sydney siders are not aware that level 1 water restrictions are now in place, this was effective as at the 1st of June 2019. These restrictions apply to all in the Sydney, Blue Mountains and Illawarra regions.

The NSW Government has implemented this to protect our water supply from drought conditions as dam levels have dropped significantly due to a lack of rain.

What does this mean for you?

If these restrictions are not followed there may be fines of $220 for individuals or $550 for businesses.

There is however a 3 month grace period to give people enough time to take note of the restrictions, this will take effect after 1 September 2019.

Tips on how to minimise your water usage, if we can all do our LITTLE bit it will make a HUGE difference!

• Time your showers and restrict them to 4 minutes
• Turn the tap off when brushing your teeth
• Wait for a full load before using the washing machine / dishwasher
• Use the eco cycles on your washing machine and dishwashers which will limit the time and water on the cycle
• Use unused drink bottle water to water plants or for washing the car

• Use the half flush button on the toilet when you can

• Look for leaking taps and ensure you have water saving / efficient devices
• Look for any large spikes in your water bill which may indicate a water leak

Within Sydney there are still many houses that have the old clay / earthenware pipes installed that service their sewer and stormwater lines.

These pipes would have been sitting in the ground for easily over 30 years.

As we experience such variations within our climate over time with ground movement and differing soil conditions the quality of these pipes diminish.

In our experience over the years jetblasting and clearing blocked pipes we notice that the pipes begin to crack or displace allowing tree roots to invade the pipe.

The tree roots in the pipe may only commence as small fibres however over time and with dryer weather conditions, these tree roots will get thicker and thicker and will eventually expand to the diameter of the pipe.

The below image was taken from a section of earthernware pipe that had to be dug up and removed then replaced with PVC as it was beyond repair.

These poor homeowners did not maintain their pipes and had their concrete driveway excavated in order to gain access to the pipe.

If these pipes were effectively maintained the tree root ingress would not have been so thick and aggressive and pipe relining may have been an option to fix the pipes.

What should you do to maintain your pipes?

1. Get an annual CCTV (camera) and Jetblast of the pipes to remove any of the tree roots and debris from the pipe. Broken sewer pipes or stormwater pipes can be fixed using the innovative pipe relining Technology.

Do you have a broken sewer pipe or stormwater pipe that runs under your concrete driveway, bathroom, house, pergola, established garden or a place that is difficult to access?

Have you been advised that it will all have to be dug up, your property damaged and then have the pipes replaced and then you are left restoring the trail of destruction?

This type of repair is a thing of the past! Pipe relining is an up and coming method of pipe repair that is being regularly used all over the world to repair damaged pipes.

The Process:

The relining process begins with an initial CCTV survey of the internals of the sewer pipe and a subsequent site survey to determine the access into the pipe. From this the technician is able to identify the repairs that need to be undertaken and the process needing to be used to fix the pipes.

The next step is to clear and remove all of the debris from the host pipe in order to ensure that the resin sticks and seals to the host pipe and has a smooth finish.

The next step is the preparation of the lining material.

In this step the felt liners are cut to size and are impregnated with a 2 part epoxy resin, a rubber bladder is then inserted into the liner wound up tightly and then positioned into place via the inspection openings, when the position is correct the bladder is inflated and holds pressure until the resin goes off. Once the resin has cured the bladder is removed and you are left with a new structural pipe within the old pipe. This pipe now has a 50 year manufacturer warranty.

Upon the inspection of this sewer line we found that the pipes were so severely damaged that over the years parts of the pipe had come away and the dirt around the pipe had collapsed and was making its way into the pipe. There was no longer the correct fall within the pipe and the sewerage and matter would continue to pool and block up this sewer line.

Unfortunately for these residents their only option now is to excavate and replace the pipes. This itself is a mammoth task, the bathrooms in 2 units need to have their tiles ripped up, their concrete slabs broken and excavated in order to get to the old pipes and replace them. Part of the driveway also needs to be excavated. This is WEEKS worth of work not to mention a highly costly exercise, intrusive and disruptive.

If they had of identified these issues earlier on and chosen to repair them, our pipe relining solution would have saved them this unsightly expense and inconvenience.

We see this type of issue often where the pipes are not well maintained and homeowners live in hope that the problem will magically go away and resolve itself.
